“Casual” Weekday Lunch

Parents went to Chinese supermarket to buy grocery in the morning.  The came home and dad said casually, “lunch will be ready in 40 minutes.”  When they called me to go downstairs for lunch, I was surprised how “casual” it was.

Crab & Shrimp by you.

Dungeness crab and shrimp!  Everything was brought alive from the market.  My dad just boiled them.  The thought of throwing live crab and shrimp into boiling water still made me go “ouch”.  But the taste of live seafood was so good and I soon forgot about the suffering of the animal.

Both the crab and the shrimp were naturally sweet.  I actually had like 10 shrimps, but somehow only took picture for 2.  I only had 1/2 crab.  A whole one was just too much for me.  Lots and lots of meat.  And I love the gooey yellow gunk from the crab.  What exactly are those thing anyway?

American way of eating crab is dipping in butter + lemon.  But I prefer my Asian dipping sauce.  I made my sauce with rice vinegar, sesame oil, cilantro and garlic.  It was simple and so good with crab (and shrimp, too).

Dad made 2 crabs and 2 or 3 lbs of shrimps.  He said that only cost about $20.  I wish I can have casual weekday lunch like this EVERYDAY!

I think those are eggs of the crab…

I thought the eggs are more of an orange color and harder in texture?

The shellfish are always so cheap at Asian markets during this season o… I was in a Vietnamese market in OC few weeks ago and got some large lobster tails for $5 a lb… and they actually taste good too~

    $5/pound for lobster? That’s a great deal!
My parents also said Vietnamese market is even cheaper than Chinese market.
Their seafood is always alive, fresh, and cheap.

After reading this post, we had a crab feast last Sat at my parents’. They got three big ones at the Vietnamese market in Rosemead. Now the craving is satisfied.

haha you did? Now I’m craving for it again!
